Pallikoodam: A Harmonious Blend of Nature and Architecture

Pallikoodam is a school that beautifully integrates nature with architecture. The campus was designed by Dr. Laurie Baker, a renowned architect known as the father of cost-efficient and eco-sensitive architecture in India. Baker, who deeply valued vernacular architecture, drew significant inspiration from these traditional concepts for his designs. Constructed by Nirmithi Kendra, the school embodies sustainable design principles. The use of exposed brick, graceful arches, intricate jali work, terracotta tiles and natural stones not only gives the campus a charming aesthetic but also reflects Baker's commitment to environmental preservation. By utilizing locally available materials, he ensured that the buildings harmonized with their natural surroundings.

Spread over a ten-acre campus, Pallikoodam features interconnected spaces that follow the natural contours of the land. This design creates a smooth flow between indoor and outdoor learning environments. The buildings, with their large windows and open doorways, invite nature inside, fostering a close connection between students and their environment.

When designing the school, Baker aimed to create a secure and comfortable space where childhood could be nurtured. Rather than constructing multi-storey buildings, he embraced the existing slopes of the land, designing a linear, single-storey structure with varying floor levels that flow naturally along the terrain. This approach treats the landscape as an asset rather than a challenge.

All the buildings on campus are thoughtfully integrated with nature, enhancing the beauty and grace of the surroundings. The use of country-burnt bricks and stones adds an aesthetically pleasing touch, making Pallikoodam a unique and harmonious environment.

Pallikoodam is more than just a school; it exemplifies how thoughtful architecture can enhance our lives while honouring the natural surroundings. The campus fosters a harmonious coexistence between nature, humanity, and buildings, creating an environment where respect for nature is paramount. Surrounded by towering trees and lush greenery, the buildings blend seamlessly with nature. The sight of green trees, burnt bricks, and grey stones offers a soothing visual experience.

The various buildings on campus include:

• The Old Block: This block features five unique classrooms, each differing in shape and size—some round, others rectangular, octagonal, or hexagonal. As students move to a new class, they encounter a fresh environment with new challenges to explore. The Old Block houses classes V and VI, and the room that once served as the library now functions as the Special Education room for children with special needs.
• The Super Block: Accommodates classes VII and VIII.
• The New Block: Includes the Biology Lab and two sections of Stds IX and X.
• The Baker Block: Built for senior students, this block houses the other two sections of Stds IX and X, as well as Stds XI and XII. This building, the last to be overseen by Laurie Baker, is dedicated to him.
• The Library and Laboratories: The campus also features a library and laboratories for Computer Science, Physics, and Chemistry.
• The MR Block (Mary Roy Block): Houses classes from Nursery to Std IV.
• Kalari: Our newest addition, for children aged 2 ½ to 4 ½ years, is located next to the School Office. This building was formerly known as ‘Kuddips’.
