We have found that Street Plays are a tremendous means of generating awareness about all types of social issues. We have used Street Plays to highlight the following

  • DOWRY IS ILLEGAL
  • DOMESTIC VIOLENCE meted out to a young woman, “Chappathi Molly”.
  • SAVE THE MEENACHIL RIVER
  • BANDHS AND HARTALS
  • SAVE THE TREES (Chipko style, we stood around the tree to prevent it being cut down)
  • SAVING THE NARMADA
  • THE LAYING OF FOUNDATION STONES BY MINISTERS
  • GANDHI and his relevance today
  • ENDOSULFAN  – The tragic effects of  P.O.P  spraying  of this chemical pesticide.
  • FEMALE FOETICIDE
  • GARBAGE
  • NIRBHAYA
  • SEXUAL HARASSMENT OF A MOVIE STAR
  • SAY ‘NO’ TO DRUGS

EXCURSIONS

These are compulsory as they create disciplined minds and bodies. Primary classes go on day trips to nearby places of interest. Junior classes go on overnight trips to places of environmental and ecological value. Senior classes go on adventure trips.

ADVENTURE PROGRAMMES

Plunge into the excitement of exploration with ‘inme’ which is an outdoor and adventure-based summer camp for young students. It takes all of our Std. IX and XI kids to Rishikesh, Tirthan, Sitlakhet, Bhimtal, Karwar, Yercaud  or Coorg for Rock Climbing, Trekking, River Rafting, River Crossing etc. Visits to Delhi, Agra and Jaipur are sometimes included with this exciting excursion. In Turtle Bay, Lakshadweep or Andamans, children experience the thrill of Scuba Diving and Snorkelling and are taught the importance of protecting marine life.

STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMMES WITHIN INDIA AND ABROAD

The Principal will announce dates for these Exchange Programmes.   Parents will be expected to ‘host’ visiting children. Similarly our students will stay with host families on these programmes. Other details will be given as and when necessary.  Participation in an Exchange is highly recommended, though not compulsory, because of financial constraints.

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

Solid Waste Management is a complex issue. For the past several years Pallikoodam has been involved in the study of Solid Waste Management. Our pupils and staff have been educated about the importance of segregating solid waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories. They have also been taught about the hazards of improper incineration.

Pallikoodam is a zero-waste campus, as the use of plastics is banned.

What has emerged is the fact that the most important item on the agenda is AWARENESS. The public must be aware of the methods whereby this terrible scourge can be eliminated. Schools and Colleges must educate children to understand Solid Waste Management. A lot of our time has been spent in experimenting with different ways of composting Solid Waste. e.g.:

  • Aerobic Composting
  • Anaerobic Composting
  • Vermiculture

In School, we follow Aerobic Composting.

SPECIAL WORKSHOPS

Pallikoodam is a school that believes in holistic education. The success of a school is measured by the values its students imbibe. Education is not limited to academics; children need to be exposed to a world beyond their curriculum. At Pallikoodam, this is achieved through a series of special workshops.

Over the past few years, the following workshops have been conducted:

  • Sailing workshops led by experienced Naval personnel.
  • Photography workshops conducted by professional photographers Alok Johri and Biju Menon.
  • Movie-making workshops by social activist Sreemith of Trivandrum Pedestrian Pictures.
  • Puppet-making and storytelling workshops by Brian Woltgen and Brigitte Revelli.

To familiarize students with other art forms, various workshops have also been conducted:

  • Modern American Dance workshops by Jaan Freeman from New York.
  • Dance workshops by Zuleikha from the U.S.A. (an international performer and storyteller).
  • Bharatanatyam workshops by Shijith Nambiar and Geeta Hariharan of Kalakshetra, Chennai.
  • Workshops conducted by SPIC MACAY.

In addition to these workshops, renowned speakers are invited occasionally to address the students. They discuss various topics such as environmental conservation, self-protection from drugs, and career opportunities for senior students.
